The artist myth that has developed around Paul Gauguin's life, created in part by him and in part by others, has been much written about. This painting isn't about wether or not he as an individual and artist is worthy of praise or scorn, rather it is a symbolic representation about the struggling artist myth.  Over time both he and Vincent Van Gough have come to represent the archetype of the artist who scarifies all, including their lives for their art.
